I'm not sure I have enough information to adequately answer your question. If you play as individuals (rather than in teams) against the field of players, please see how to set up your league at Set up an individual league (no teams, no match play). If you want certain individuals to play against a subgroup of all of the players (your "Playing Groups"), then you would designate groups in Settings -> Teams. Please see Teams - Create divisions for playing only within division. If you set up your league so you have one player in each team, then you can have multiple divisions/playing groups.
